Imi place ca UK mentine presiunea si e in continuare in ofensiva.
They are making proposals to change our constitution which are insulting for our nation and our people. It's their brains, not our constitution, which need to be changed. What they are offering to us is a clear remnant of colonial thinking.
Vladimir Putin
It is surprising to me that the Russian authorities do not see their own national interest in putting on trial, in the place where most of the evidence and witnesses are available, a suspected murderer and carrier of highly toxic radioactive substances.
Sir Anthony Brenton, ambasadorul UK
The Russian Constitution underpins and guarantees our new era of Russian statehood. Drafted during the Yeltsin presidency, more than 59 million people - close to the entire population of the UK - took part in the national referendum which delivered a clear majority voting for it to become law. In reflecting on this week's events, few people in Russia have failed to spot the irony of the UK justifying its actions by citing the sanctity of UK law, while making the express request that Russia breaks its own.
Yuri Fedotov, ambasadorul Rusiei

… As Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted: à€œRussia made its decision on the basis of the Constitution and in full compliance with our rights and responsibilities under the European Convention on Cooperation.à€
London’s position, on the other hand, is an example of double standards. British justice often refuses to extradite criminals who are on British territory. And no, this isn’t just about Boris Berezovsky the fugitive oligarch, Akhmed Zakayev [the foreign representative of Chechen terrorists], or former YUKOS executives charged with tax crimes.
In October 1998, a Spanish court issued an arrest warrant for Chile’s former dictator, Augusto Pinochet, who was undergoing medical treatment in London at the time. A London court decided to approve extradition, but in March 2000, Home Secretary Jack Straw refused to extradite the dictator. Circumventing the court ruling required a special vote in the House of Lords, where it was stated that Pinochet should not be held accountable for crimes committed prior to 1988. There’s an example of legal flexibility for you.
Russia is behaving like a normal law-based state, where the life of every individual is valuable and his fate can only be decided on the basis of law, not political decisions.
What do the four Russian diplomats have to do with the polonium poisoning story? After all, few people believe Berezovsky’s horror stories about hordes of Russian spies walking all over London in search of someone to poison. Obviously, the expulsion of these diplomats is a response to successful operations by Russian counter-intelligence, which has demonstrated links between political émigrés in London and British intelligence. All the fuss over the Lugovoi case is an attempt to cover up Britain’s own intelligence failures.
Moscow is amazed that the British Foreign Office is politicizing the Litvinenko case. Russia intends to keep its investigation entirely within the framework of criminal law. Sergei Markov, a member of the Public Chamber, maintains that politicization results from à€œBerezovsky using the Litvinenko case to discredit the Russian leadership with the aim of disrupting the transfer of power to Putin’s successor. The tail is apparently wagging the dog.à€

warpguy,
Care-i ideea?
Foarte bine formuleaza ambasadorul britanic: “It is surprising to me that the Russian authorities do not see their own national interest in putting on trial a suspected murderer and carrier of highly toxic radioactive substances.”

ai citit Koba the Dread: Laughter and the Twenty Million de Martin Amis? Nu este doar o carte despre Stalin, mie mi-a ramas in minte, l-as numi, confrontul intre doua generatii (tatal,Kingsley Amis si fiul,Martin_Amis) pe acelasi argument in acest caz Rusia pe timpul lui Stalin, crimele lui.
